Is AI Quietly Recommending Your Competitors Instead of You?
The 25-Point AI Visibility Checklist
Every day, AI tools are deciding which businesses get recommended and which get skipped. The businesses getting picked are not smarter or better. They are just easier for AI to find, understand, and trust. This is a new channel, and your competitors are already fighting for it.
This checklist tells you where your business stands right now.
Before you start: test this the right way
Use a private or incognito browser window, not logged in to any AI account. If you are logged in, or the AI remembers past chats with you, it may already know things about your business that a real stranger asking the same question would never be told. A clean test means starting from zero, the same way a new customer would.
Grab a pen & paper or your calculator. Go through each item below. Give yourself a 0, 1, or 2 for each one.
0 = No, not at all
1 = Somewhat, or partially
2 = Yes, clearly
Section 1: Does AI Even Know You Exist?
Ask AI what your business does. Does it get this right? (test this in a clean browser, see above)
Ask AI what industry or niche you are in. Does it know?
Ask AI where you operate or who you serve. Does it know?
Does AI associate you with the specific thing you are best known for?
Ask AI to name businesses like yours. Do you show up?
Section 2: Are You Losing Customers Before They Ever Find You?
Does your website clearly state what you offer, in plain language?
Does your site answer the questions your customers actually ask?
Can someone, or an AI, pull out your key facts quickly, like what you do, where, and for whom?
Is your site built in a way that is easy for AI and search engines to read, not just humans?
Do you have a clear page for each core service or product?
Section 3: Would AI Trust You Enough to Recommend You?
Do other websites or sources mention your business?
Is your business information, like name, location, and services, consistent everywhere online?
Do you have any third-party sources that back up your expertise?
Do you have reviews or mentions that AI tools could pull from?
Would an outside source confirm what you claim about yourself?
Section 4: Are You Winning the Comparison, or Losing It Quietly?
Do you have content that helps someone choose between you and a competitor?
Do you answer questions like "who is the best" or "who is the top" in your space?
Do you have content built around "near me" or local searches, if that matters for you?
Do you address recommendation-style questions directly, like "who should I hire for this"?
If AI compared you to your closest competitor right now, would you come out ahead?
Section 5: Are You Ready, or Are You Guessing?
Do you know what AI currently says about your business, right now, today?
Have you ever checked how AI describes your competitors, side by side with you?
Do you have a clear, single way you want AI to describe your business?
Have you made any changes to help AI understand your business better?
If a stranger asked AI to recommend a business like yours tomorrow, are you confident your name comes up?
Add up your score.
0 to 20: Competitors are winning this channel, not you.
AI is not picking you yet. Right now, your competitors are more likely to get recommended, simply because they are easier for AI to find and trust.
21 to 40: You are splitting the opportunity.
AI sometimes finds you, sometimes does not. You are in the game, but you are leaving real opportunity on the table every day this stays unresolved.
41 to 50: You are winning the new channel.
AI already understands and trusts your business. Keep an eye on this. Competitors are catching up fast, and this can shift quickly.
